In reference to the construction of a 160-meter wrong tunnel, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Tachiaos explained that it was not an error but rather a change in methodology. Speaking on SKAI, he stated that the tunnel was indeed necessary for the project but was constructed using a different method than originally planned. The contractor had proposed a step-by-step approach covering 10-meter segments, yet they opted for opening half the circular tunnel over a length of 160 meters instead. Tachiaos emphasized that this represented a shift in methodology rather than a mistake, highlighting that such errors are unlikely from a company of high standing. He also mentioned that the ‘Hellenic Metro’ lacked studies confirming the safety of the new method, leading to ongoing correspondence with the contractor. An investigation (EDE) has been ordered to address the issue, and penalties will be imposed. Continuous monitoring of infrastructure ensures no risk to nearby hospitals or roads, as the tunnel roof lies more than 20 meters below ground level.
