Nigeria: Kidnappers demand huge sum to release 81 students

The attack on Bethel Baptist High School in the Nigerian state of Kantuna marked the 10th mass kidnapping of students since December 2020 in northwestern Nigeria.

The kidnappers are demanding a ransom of 1 million nairas (more than 2,000 euros) for each of the 81 indoor high school students abducted during a raid in northern Nigeria last month.

Authorities attribute the abductions to gangs they generally call bandits – “thugs”, or “bandits” – for ransom.

The kidnappers released 28 children last month. A first group, an equal number of children, had been allowed to leave for the first two days after the abduction.
