An increase of 3.4% was presented by the turnover of the organized (food stores over 100 sq.m., in mainland Greece, Crete and the islands of June & Aegean) in the first half of 2024, compared to the corresponding period in 2023, according to the most recent market figures of NielsenIQ (YTD figures to 30 June 2024). Fixed for this increase are fast-moving consumer products that make up 70% of the sales of organized retail food and grow by 3.6%. From NielsenIQ’s market figures it appears that demand is the one that leads to the development of fast-moving consumers (3.3%), as the average basket price increases in the first half of the year marginally only by 0.3%. Growth rates of the mean value degrade month by month: the six-month increase comes only from the first quarter (+1.0% compared to the corresponding of 2023) while the second is recorded a deflator course (-0.5%). The same evidence shows that only in the super-categories of standard foods there is a growth of their average price (+1.2%), while in the super-categories of non-food there are now deflationary trends, compared to a year ago, with home care products having reduced their average price by -4,6%, as well as personal hygiene and beauty products by -3,2%. Despite the apparent decreasing rate of price growth, private label products continue their upward trend, having increased their sales levels to a value of 4.7% and reaching, for the first half of 2024, a market share of 25%. Private label products (Private Labels) as a whole showed a marked decrease in their average price by -2.0%, with their sold volumes increasing by 6.7% and gaining more space in the household basket. At the same time, the promotional intensity continues to be particularly high, however it remained basically stable compared to the total of 2023, at 68.6%. It is noted that in the non-food categories there was a decrease in the percentage of products sold under some kind of promotional energy, as recorded by NielsenIQ.
