Low-income renters are among the biggest beneficiaries of the new permanent support package announced yesterday (April 22, 2025) by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and detailed by Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrikakis. The initiative includes a reimbursement of 1/12 of rent paid in 2024 for individuals meeting specific income and asset criteria. Additionally, a financial aid of €250 will be granted to low-income pensioners, uninsured elderly, and recipients of social security benefits (AMEA). Since one measure does not exclude the other, unmarried low-income pensioners (including uninsured elderly and AMEA recipients) with an annual income up to €14,000 and immovable property worth up to €120,000, as well as married pensioners with household incomes up to €26,000 and immovable property worth up to €140,000, can receive both benefits. These citizens will not only get the €250 support next November but also a rent refund of up to €800 if they reside in a rented primary residence. Others eligible for the rent refund, such as pensioners with higher incomes/assets or employees, will only receive the rent reimbursement based on their 2024 expenses. Those declaring rent expenses this year will temporarily miss out, as their refunds will be processed in 2026 instead of November 2025.
