New meeting of Mitsotakis with farmers on Friday – “We left Maximos without substantial answers for compensations”

The Prime Minister’s new meeting with representatives of Thessaly at Maximos Palace will take place next Friday (15.03.24), with the exact time not yet specified and expected to be announced within the next few days. “We will do everything we can to satisfy your demands” is the message that Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent to the representatives of the farmers of Thessaly during the meeting on Monday (11.03.24). The Prime Minister, addressing farmers, welcomed the fact that agricultural mobilisations were generally decent and a great effort was made not to disturb economic and social life. “We agree that many of the farmers’ demands are fair and we will do everything we can to satisfy them. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and the technical discussions on the return of his EPC on agricultural oil have moved forward in 2025. What we are interested in is the return to be fairer and more effective, For agricultural current our aim is to be able to provide predictability over time for farmers to know what they will pay,” Mr Mitsotakis stressed. For his part, the President of the United Federation of Agricultural Associations of Larissa, Rizos Marudas, stated that the 15th member committee left Maximos without any substantial answers regarding the timetables for the completion of compensation for damage in 2023. Farmers called for there to be no change in land use in Thessaly and expressed the need for all necessary projects to achieve this objective. According to Rizo Maruda, there was no substantial update on the Dutch company’s master plan arguing that “there appears to be a long delay in the timetable”. As far as direct payments are concerned, he noted that according to the information they had, they would have been paid by the end of June. “We need immediate liquidity since the new growing season begins,” he said. As he said, there was information that there would be compensation for the tree crops destroyed. Finally, as he said, speaking of Evros, there are delays in repairing the damage.
