A new wave of internal tension has emerged within the New Left party following the decision by Rodopi MP Özgüür Ferhat to become an independent lawmaker. The move comes amid broader political shifts in Greece’s centre-left landscape and the recent re-emergence of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on the national stage.

“Everyone Is Judged by Their Choices”

Senior figures within the New Left leadership commented on Ferhat’s departure, stating: “Everyone is judged by their choices.” They emphasized that the space for radical left politics “must continue to exist,” adding: “We move forward based on decisions taken at our Party Congress, which clearly define the responsibilities of all members.”

Background and Context

Ferhat was originally elected to Parliament on SYRIZA’s ballot and later joined the New Left alongside ten other MPs. His appearance on Monday, 11 May 2026, at a citizens’ initiative event in Chalandri—where Tsipras delivered a speech—added significant political weight to his decision.

Ferhat formally submitted his letter of independence to Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis. The announcement was made during the plenary session on Friday, 15 May 2026, by presiding MP Vassilis Vilardos.

Following his departure, the New Left’s parliamentary group now comprises 11 MPs—down from 12. Under the Parliament’s Standing Orders, parties formed after elections must maintain at least 10 MPs to retain official parliamentary group status.
