A 45-year-old prison staff member narrowly escaped death after being attacked by an inmate with a makeshift spear at the New Heraklion Prison in Crete. A video released by Star captures the harrowing incident inside the facility. During a routine cell inspection, the inmate struck the staff member twice—once in the back and once near the carotid artery in the neck—with the crude weapon. The attacker was a 25-year-old Syrian inmate serving an eight-year sentence for human trafficking. Following the assault, a struggle ensued as the staff member attempted to defend himself using a plastic table while being repeatedly stabbed. Police are investigating how the dangerous item ended up in the prisoner’s possession. Fortunately, the staff member sustained only minor injuries.
