A political earthquake has struck the UK, with developments within the Labour Party unfolding rapidly following Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s resignation. Now, another unexpected move has thrown the party into further turmoil — opening the door for Andy Burnham’s potential return to Parliament and a possible challenge to Keir Starmer’s leadership.

MP Resigns to Trigger By-Election

Labour MP Josh Simons has announced his resignation from the seat of Makerfield, triggering a by-election in a move widely seen as a calculated political statement. The decision comes amid deepening internal tensions within the Labour Party, which have rattled British politics.

The aim is clear: to create an opportunity for Andy Burnham — widely regarded as the leading contender to succeed Starmer — to re-enter the House of Commons and subsequently mount a leadership challenge.

‘Stepping Aside for Burnham’

In his announcement, Simons said: ‘Today, I am putting first the people I represent and the country I love — and submitting my resignation as MP for Makerfield. I am stepping aside so that Andy Burnham can return home.’

He acknowledged the decision was not easy, but expressed firm belief that Burnham could revitalise both the party and the nation. ‘We have lost the trust of the people we were founded to serve. It is my unwavering conviction that nothing short of urgent, radical, and courageous reform will make the difference.’

A Defining Moment for Labour

Simons warned that Labour now faces a pivotal moment — and what he described as ‘a final chance’ to boost economic growth, secure the UK’s borders, and reform the state and political system. ‘This is the battle ahead of us — and I believe Andy is the right person to lead it,’ he concluded.

Burnham Confirms Candidacy

Andy Burnham, current Mayor of Manchester, confirmed he intends to stand in the Makerfield by-election. ‘I confirm that I will seek permission from the party’s National Executive Committee to stand as a candidate in the Makerfield by-election.’

In his statement, Burnham stressed the need for change on the national political stage while reaffirming his support for the Labour government — and pledging to work to restore public trust among voters.
