Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday, June 19, 2026, that Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will remain deployed in southern Lebanon. His statement came hours after four Israeli soldiers were killed in Hezbollah attacks during the night of Thursday — an escalation widely seen as a severe violation of the existing ceasefire.

‘Heavy Price’ for Ceasefire Violations

In a formal statement issued by his office, Netanyahu warned that Israel ‘will not tolerate attacks against our soldiers or our territory’ and vowed to hold Hezbollah accountable. ‘Hezbollah will pay a very heavy price for these kinds of attacks,’ he said.

Continued Presence in the Security Zone

The Prime Minister confirmed Israel’s continued military presence in its self-declared security zone in southern Lebanon ‘for as long as necessary’ to protect northern Israeli communities. This zone stretches from the Mediterranean coast to the strategic Bint Jbeil area — including the historically contested Bofor Hill.

Netanyahu also revealed he had ordered IDF forces to launch a powerful retaliatory campaign against Hezbollah ‘last night’ following what he called a ‘criminal attack’ — a direct reference to the deadly ambush that claimed the lives of four soldiers, including Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, commander of the Armored Corps’ 52nd Battalion.

Defense Minister Reinforces Stance

Defense Minister Israel Katz echoed Netanyahu’s position, stressing that IDF troops would stay in Lebanon regardless of recent diplomatic developments — including a U.S.-Iran-brokered agreement aimed at ending hostilities across all fronts. ‘We will not allow harm to our soldiers or civilians,’ Katz stated. ‘Every ceasefire violation by Hezbollah will be met with overwhelming force.’

Katz added that IDF operations in the zone are focused on protecting northern communities, neutralizing threats, and destroying terrorist infrastructure — both above and below ground.

Military Response Underway

The IDF reported today that, since Thursday night, it has struck ‘more than 80 targets’ across southern Lebanon — including Hezbollah command centers, rocket launchers, and other militant infrastructure tied to the Iran-backed group. According to the military, ‘dozens’ of Hezbollah operatives have been eliminated in the operation.

The army described the strikes as a direct response to ‘repeated and flagrant violations’ of the ceasefire by Hezbollah — underscoring Israel’s determination to enforce its red lines despite broader regional diplomatic efforts.
