Naxos: Permanent Fence at Portara Completed – Ministry of Culture Announcement

A permanent fence has been installed at the Portara on the island of Naxos, following approval by the Ministry of Culture and unanimous endorsement from the Central Archaeological Council. The project was carried out by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades as originally planned, despite disruptions caused by controversial arrests of archaeological staff, unnecessary legal disputes, and actions that strained cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Naxos. The Ministry confirmed that the temporary fence, erected after an incident involving a visitor on July 29, 2025, was legally mandated under Law 4858/2021 to ensure site protection. The municipality had filed a request for its immediate removal, to be heard in court on September 29, 2025, but ultimately withdrew the claim, leading to the cancellation of the trial. Notably, a second violation occurred on August 11–12, 2025, reinforcing the need for safeguards. The permanent fencing was completed ahead of schedule on September 26, 2025. The Ministry emphasized that all actions were pre-planned and documented, refuting claims by the municipality and reaffirming compliance with legal and preservation protocols.
