At the NATO Summit in Ankara, alliance leaders reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to collective defense under Article 5 of the Washington Treaty—the cornerstone of member-state security. In a joint declaration, they underscored unity and resolve in confronting today’s complex security challenges, emphasizing that an attack on one remains an attack on all.

Russia as Primary Long-Term Threat

The declaration identifies Russia as the most significant long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security and stability. It also highlights terrorism as a persistent danger, calling for continued vigilance and coordinated action. To strengthen deterrence and defense capabilities, allies announced new defense equipment procurements totaling over $50 billion—alongside measures to boost cooperation across the defense industrial base.

Focus on Next-Generation Capabilities

Investments will prioritize cutting-edge technologies, including unmanned systems, integrated air and missile defense networks, cyber defense, space-based capabilities, artificial intelligence applications, and the development of a shared transatlantic ‘battle cloud’ infrastructure.

$70 Billion in Military Aid for Ukraine

On Ukraine, NATO leaders reiterated their steadfast support for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They pledged €70 billion in military assistance for 2026—including equipment, training, and other operational support—and signaled their intent to maintain at least that level of aid into 2027.

Other Key Commitments

The declaration also stresses that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons and calls for safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Finally, allies expressed gratitude to Turkey for hosting the summit.
