Today, Saturday, May 24, 2025, according to the church calendar, commemorates Saint Meletius and fellow martyrs. The names celebrated today include Palladia, Pallada, Palada, Markianē, Markiana, Fotinē, Fōtō, Fōphē, Fōtoula, Faē, Fowphō, Christianos, Christianē. Saint Meletius and his companions were martyred during the reign of Emperor Elagabalus (218–222 AD). Meletius, along with Saints Stephen and John, served as soldiers who refused to renounce their faith in Christ despite severe torture. Ultimately, Meletius was strangled, while Stephen and John were beheaded. Their steadfastness inspired others like Serapion and Kallinikos, who also embraced Christianity and suffered martyrdom. Additionally, twelve couriers, three women (Markianē, Palladia, and Sosanna), two children (Kyriakos and Christianos), and a multitude totaling eleven thousand two hundred and eight martyrs followed in their footsteps, giving their lives for Christ. Today is also European Parks Day.
