Today, Saturday (May 10, 2025), according to the church calendar, the feast of Saint Simon the Apostle is celebrated. The name honored today, as per the ecclesiastical calendar, is Simon. Saint Simon the Apostle, also known as the Zealot, was one of the twelve Disciples of the Lord and the brother of Jude the Levite. The Apostle Simon earned the title ‘Zealot’ due to his fervor and zeal in preaching the Gospel message. He hailed from Cana in Galilee and is also known as Simon the Canaanite (or Nathanael or Bartholomew – son of Tholomaeus). After Christ’s Ascension and the grace of Pentecost, Simon embarked on an extensive missionary journey. He taught the Gospel in Persia, where he dismantled polytheistic myths and revealed the light of Evangelical truth to many. He then traveled to Africa, proclaiming the life-giving Word of the true God and Savior from Egypt to Mauritania. His final mission took him to Britain, where he taught the Christian faith to the people. Captured by idolaters, he endured torture and ultimately suffered crucifixion.
