A near-tragedy unfolded at noon on Thursday, March 5, 2026, in Nafplio, when a 78-year-old tourist was seriously injured during a hike on the Prophet Elias hill — a historic site overlooking the town and its iconic Palamidi Fortress.
The man, a visitor from Norway, suffered severe injuries after falling on the steep, rugged terrain, leaving him unable to move. An immediate large-scale rescue operation was launched to extract and assist him.
A team from Greece’s Special Unit for Disaster Response (EMAK) was dispatched to the scene, alongside a rapid-response unit of the Nafplio Fire Service. According to local news outlet Argolikeseidhseis.gr, firefighters deployed a specialized extraction plan tailored to the difficult access conditions. Using appropriate technical equipment, they safely reached the injured man and transported him to a location accessible by ambulance.
He was then transferred to Nafplio General Hospital for emergency treatment. The exact circumstances leading to the fall remain under investigation and have not yet been fully clarified.
