On Saturday, May 17, 2025, law enforcement authorities in Mykonos and Piraeus seized 347 cartons of illegal cigarettes and arrested two Egyptians involved in the smuggling operation. During a routine inspection at the port of Mykonos, a 60-year-old Egyptian was found in possession of 147 cartons of illegal cigarettes, each containing 10 packs of 20 cigarettes without the required excise tax bands. Further investigation revealed another Egyptian on the same vessel also carrying contraband cigarettes. Later that afternoon, authorities intercepted a 62-year-old Egyptian at the Piraeus port with 200 cartons of illegal cigarettes. Both individuals were charged under Law 2960/2001 regarding the National Customs Code and transferred to the Port Authority of Mykonos. In total, 72,000 illegal cigarettes were confiscated, with an estimated evasion of duties and taxes amounting to €21,499.368. The case is currently under investigation by the Mykonos Port Authority.
