‘My son is a good boy and hasn’t done anything,’ the mother of the 20-year-old suspect told newsit.gr. He has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 27-year-old police lieutenant’s son late on Wednesday evening in Asyrmatou Park in Agios Dimitrios, a southern suburb of Athens.

Greek police, after reviewing witness statements and collected video evidence, identified and apprehended the suspect. During his interrogation, he admitted to the charges against him related to the fatal stabbing.

The victim, the son of a Greek Police (ELAS) lieutenant, was fatally stabbed in the chest — an act reportedly carried out by the 20-year-old, who is currently serving his mandatory military service as a naval conscript.

In her emotional statement to newsit.gr, the suspect’s mother said she does not know whether anyone influenced or pressured her son to commit the crime, and maintains his innocence: ‘I’m in terrible psychological shape right now. I know my son didn’t do anything. He’s an extremely good boy. My son didn’t do anything.’

His grandfather, also speaking to newsit.gr, said: ‘I found out just two hours ago what happened. I’m still crying.’

The 20-year-old suspect, along with his 21-year-old friend and two 20-year-old women, was brought before the Piraeus Naval Court due to his active military status. There, the case files were separated: the two women and the friend — accused of harboring a criminal — will be referred to the Hellenic Military Academy (Evelpidon), where formal charges will be read to them.
