Starting 1 January 2028, municipal fees in Greece will no longer be collected through electricity bills. Instead, they will be directly administered by local municipalities.
New Regulation in Local Government Code
Minister of the Interior Theodoros Livánios announced today (26 June 2026) that a new provision will be added to the draft Local Government Code currently under debate and vote in Parliament’s plenary session. The amendment will enable the issuance of a Presidential Decree to formalise the separation of municipal fee collection from electricity billing.
Livánios stated the goal is to “fully decouple municipal fees from electricity bills”, noting this change responds to longstanding requests from both municipalities and electricity providers.
No Change to Fees Themselves — Only Collection Method
The minister clarified that the substance of municipal fees remains unchanged—only the method of collection is being restructured. Implementing the new system requires time for administrative preparation, and full rollout is scheduled for 1 January 2028.
Livánios compared the new process to the ENFIA property tax system: taxpayers will receive electronic notifications and will be able to pay the fees in 12 equal monthly instalments.
