A profound grief has gripped the island of Lesvos following the death of a 36-year-old doctor just days after giving birth to her first child. The young physician, Magda, suffered serious postpartum complications at Mytilene General Hospital — complications that ultimately proved fatal despite urgent medical intervention.
Complications After Natural Delivery
Magda had been scheduled for a caesarean section on Friday, but delivered naturally instead. Shortly afterward, she developed a high fever, and her condition rapidly deteriorated. She was intubated at the Mytilene hospital, but doctors soon judged her situation critical and decided to transfer her to Athens by air ambulance.
Fatal Cardiac Arrest During Evacuation
Tragically, during the helicopter evacuation on Tuesday, Magda suffered cardiac arrest and passed away en route. Her death sent shockwaves across the local community — described by colleagues as sudden and devastating, like ‘lightning in a clear sky’.
A Beloved Colleague and Community Member
Magda, originally from the village of Skopelos, had lived and worked in Mytilene for over six years — most recently as a permanent physician with the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB). Prior to joining EKAB, she served in the Emergency Department (T.E.P.) at Mytilene General Hospital, where she was widely admired for her warmth, professionalism, and constant smile.
Stathis Kleanthis, President of the Hospital Workers’ Union in Mytilene, recalled her dedication: ‘She approached everyone with love and a smile. She was an exceptional person — that’s why we’re all in shock.’
Her husband, also a doctor at Mytilene General Hospital, was preparing to marry her before the birth of their child. Just months earlier, Magda had temporarily stepped away from medicine — a profession she’d loved since childhood — to welcome her newborn.
Three years ago, she lost her father and shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook: ‘You rushed away from us… but you’ll always be in my heart, my mind, and my life. I’ll love you forever.’
Colleagues Pay Tribute
Michalis Giannakos, President of the Panhellenic Federation of Hospital Doctors (POEDIN), confirmed the gravity of the case: ‘Despite heroic efforts by her colleagues, her condition worsened on Sunday. The decision to evacuate her to Athens was made immediately — but she suffered cardiac arrest during transport.’
‘We are devastated. We mourn the loss of our 36-year-old colleague — a unique, irreplaceable member of EKAB Mytilene,’ he added.
