A new rescue alert was triggered on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, on Mount Olympus in northern Greece, after a 67-year-old French hiker sustained a leg injury. Meanwhile, search and recovery operations for a 25-year-old Spanish climber—missing since 20 May—were successfully concluded the same afternoon.

Injured hiker evacuated from E4 trail

According to the Hellenic Fire Service, the French woman was located in a difficult-to-access area along the E4 hiking trail on Mount Olympus. She was transported to the ‘Prionia’ staging area—the main access point at the mountain’s base—where she was handed over to an ambulance operated by the National Centre for Direct Aid (EKAB).

Four firefighters responded using two vehicles to carry out the evacuation.

Recovery of Spanish climber’s body

The body of the missing Spanish climber was found on 25 May in a remote, snow-covered area near the ‘Louki’ site—a high-altitude location on the mountain’s northern slopes. The discovery followed an intensive multi-day search operation launched after authorities were alerted on the evening of 20 May.

The response involved 14 firefighters from the Litochoro Fire Service, mountain rescue teams from the 2nd and 8th Emergency Response Units (EMAK), drone specialists from the Central Macedonia Regional Fire Directorate (PEPYD), volunteers from the Hellenic Rescue Team (EOD), and helicopters operated by the Hellenic Air Force’s Search and Rescue Command (EKSSED).

The recovered remains were airlifted by an EKSSED helicopter to the helipad of the 24th Armoured Brigade in Litochoro, where they were transferred to an EKAB ambulance for further handling.
