Moments of Terror on Crete’s Northern Motorway: Driver Swerves into Oncoming Lane for Overtake, Avoids Head-On Crash

Another serious incident of dangerous driving has been recorded on Crete’s Northern Motorway (BOAK). A recently published video shows a reckless driver performing an extremely hazardous overtaking maneuver—endangering not only his own life but also those of other road users.

High-Risk Overtake Near Agios Rafail

The incident occurred on the BOAK heading toward Rethymno, just past the area of Agios Rafail. As seen in the footage, the driver of a silver car crossed into the opposite lane—violating the double solid center line—to overtake slower-moving traffic, even as vehicles were approaching from the opposite direction.

Narrow Misses and Sudden Braking

A small delivery van traveling toward Chania managed to swerve at the last moment, narrowly avoiding a head-on collision. Meanwhile, drivers of other vehicles were forced to brake sharply to prevent accidents—or even a multi-vehicle pile-up.

Luckily, the incident had no tragic outcome: no one was injured. Still, as zarpanews.gr reports, the video starkly illustrates how easily an illegal overtake can escalate into a severe road accident—especially on a high-speed highway like the BOAK.

A Recurring Problem

Dangerous overtakes and unlawful maneuvers remain a daily occurrence on the BOAK, particularly during summer months when tourist traffic surges. This latest episode serves as yet another sobering reminder that just a few seconds of inattention—or recklessness—can have grave consequences.
