Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed optimism during his regular meeting with President of the Hellenic Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas that fuel prices will soon return to normal. He attributed recent inflationary pressures to rising oil prices — now easing — and said: “We see this easing translating into lower prices; I am optimistic about a return to normality.”

Support Measures Backed by Fiscal Strength

On the government’s draft bill introducing new support measures, Mitsotakis emphasized the state’s responsibility to assist citizens facing prolonged increases in the cost of essential goods. “It is the government’s duty to support society,” he stated, adding that Greece’s budget surplus provides the fiscal space needed to deliver such aid.

The bill — scheduled for parliamentary approval on 24 June — reflects this approach. Mitsotakis noted that the government can implement these measures with fiscal security because the economy’s trajectory remains positive.

Katseli Law Resolution Sends Message of Fairness

Regarding the long-awaited resolution of the Katseli Law — a framework for debt restructuring and home protection for over-indebted households — Mitsotakis said the government had exceeded expectations. “We are sending a message of security to all conscientious borrowers,” he said, describing the reform as a fair and respectful closure of a longstanding issue affecting those who tried to meet their obligations.

He also stressed that legislation must always prioritize sound public finances. “Citizens should be cautious and vigilant about unfunded commitments that exceed budgetary capacity — our country paid dearly for such practices in the past,” he warned.

Greek PM Welcomes Iran Peace Agreement

Mitsotakis concluded by expressing satisfaction over the initial peace agreement reached in Iran, saying: “I hope there will be no further disruptions in the coming months.”
