Mitsotakis to Libya: Take Action to Prevent New Migration Route

in

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent a clear message to Libya during his meeting with European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, at Maximos Mansion. Mitsotakis emphasized that the authorities in eastern Libya must act to reduce migration flows toward Greece, in order to prevent the establishment of a new migratory route through the region.

The Greek leader expressed appreciation for the European Commission’s efforts in this direction, noting that Commissioner Brunner will visit Libya on July 8 alongside the migration ministers of Greece, Italy, and Malta. The discussions also focused on the implementation of the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, particularly regarding returns and agreements with third countries.

During the talks, Mitsotakis reiterated Greece’s commitment to cooperating with Libyan authorities to ensure that migrant boats do not depart from Libyan shores. He acknowledged the pressure seen in recent months along the route between eastern Libya and Crete, calling it a challenge that needs urgent containment.

Commissioner Brunner thanked Greece for its cooperation and border protection efforts, which he described as vital for the entire European Union. He confirmed plans to travel to Libya next week as part of the ‘Team Europe’ approach, aimed at showing unity among EU member states in addressing migration challenges.

Both leaders agreed on the importance of continuing legislative efforts at the European level, including finalizing the Returns Regulation and defining safe third countries—key tools in tackling irregular migration.
