Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to attend the funeral of Vagia Nestora — mother of New Democracy MP Aphrodite Nestora — in Kozani on Thursday, 9 July 2026. The ceremony carries deep political and human significance, coming in the wake of a series of arson attacks targeting ND officials in Thessaloniki.
Funeral Details
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 at the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos in Kozani, followed by burial at the Agios Georgios Cemetery in the same city.
Tragic Context
Vagia Nestora died after an arson attack on a residential building in Thessaloniki where her daughter, lawyer and ND MP Aphrodite Nestora, lives. The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 July 2026 — part of a coordinated wave of arson incidents that also targeted the homes of two other ND figures in Thessaloniki: Zisis Ioakeimovits, chairman of ND’s Thessaloniki Executive Committee, and former MP for Second Thessaloniki Savvas Anastasiadis.
Other Dignitaries Expected
In addition to Prime Minister Mitsotakis, PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis and SYRIZA MP for Kozani Kalliope Vetta are also expected to attend the funeral, according to confirmed reports.
PM’s Full Schedule
Later the same day, at 20:30, Mitsotakis will take part in an international panel discussion as part of the Economist’s 30th Annual Roundtable with the Greek government, hosted at the Grand Resort Lagonissi. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will also participate in the event.
