During his two-day visit to Mount Sinai, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reassured that there would be no change in the character of St. Catherine’s Monastery. Speaking at the Double Holy Assembly of the monastic community—attended by abbots, representatives of monasteries, members of government, and political officials—he emphasized Greece’s commitment to preserving this historic site.
‘You can trust us; there is absolutely no possibility that the character of this monastery will change,’ Mitsotakis stated, adding that Greece is working closely with Egypt to legally ensure the preservation of the monastery for centuries to come.
He further highlighted Greece’s role as a stabilizing force in the region and pledged to use diplomatic strength to support Orthodox Christians across the Middle East who are facing challenges due to conflicts and wars.
Mitsotakis described Mount Athos as a ‘beacon of spirituality’ illuminating the path of faith and the nation for over a millennium. He announced more than ten initiatives, including an increase in annual financial support from €2 million to €3 million, and approval of €9 million for post-earthquake restoration efforts. These measures also include infrastructure improvements, protection of historical treasures, and addressing long-standing issues faced by the monastic state.
The prime minister stressed that safeguarding the universal and ecumenical character of Mount Athos is a national duty and a heavy responsibility toward future generations. He noted that while the monastic state enjoys autonomy, the Greek state must never neglect its historical rights and spiritual mission.
Mitsotakis also spoke on a personal note, describing how the spiritual influence of the monastic state has shaped him and his family, especially his son who accompanied him on the visit. He urged all to understand that Mount Athos should not become a field for influence-peddling or partisan interests.
In today’s changing world, he said, the message of Mount Athos must remain one of truth, adherence to tradition, and open-mindedness—offering a unifying spiritual force beyond worldly divisions.
