Speaking ahead of the European Council meeting in Brussels, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed the recent de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East and its potential impact on energy prices. ‘Greece welcomes the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, as well as any initiative that contributes to easing regional tensions,’ he said, underscoring Athens’ consistent support for diplomatic solutions to such challenges.

Prioritizing Maritime Freedom and Energy Affordability

Mitsotakis identified the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz as an immediate priority. He also noted that the Greek government is closely monitoring global oil and natural gas prices. ‘There is already a first significant easing,’ he stated, emphasizing the state’s responsibility to ensure that falling crude oil prices are passed on promptly to consumers at the pump — lowering diesel and gasoline prices across Greece for the benefit of all citizens.

EU Budget Framework and Cohesion Policy

On the new multiannual financial framework of the European Union, Mitsotakis reiterated that the ambitious goals set by EU leaders require equally ambitious financing tools. He stressed that Greece — alongside many other member states — will actively advocate for preserving the core of cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy.
