His great satisfaction for the portfolio the portfolio of the Commissioner for Transport and Tourism received from the Commission expresses his post. As Kyriakos Mitsotakis points out, the portfolio of Apostolos Tzitzikosta in the Commission highlights the geopolitical importance of Greece and its strategic position. More specifically, the Prime Minister’s post is as follows: “Let me tell you a few things you don’t know: Firstly, the title alone, including Tourism, is a great success for our country. We have managed and convinced the European Commission that tourism deserves its own space in European policies. And its site is Greek, as Greece is a pioneer in sustainable tourism development and can contribute with proposals and initiatives towards sustainable tourism and infrastructure improvement. The portfolio also highlights the geopolitical importance of Greece and its strategic position, as a gateway country, on trade, energy and networking, both towards the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe, and as a northeast end of the Mediterranean. It reflects the upgrading of our country’s position and its important role in interconnection and transport, especially towards the wider Balkan region, which still requires strengthening of its infrastructure, from which our country will benefit, by gaining a seamless connection with Central Europe, the Baltic and the Black Sea. The central position of Greece on the routes – transport and energy – to and from Europe, as well as the role – bridge with the Middle East and North Africa, is thus strengthened. Greece’s portfolio handles important projects and Community resources, such as Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the EU’s financial instrument. for strategic investments in transport, energy and digital networks. This is the ‘SPD of networks’. Indicative of the importance of the fact that during the period 2021-2027 handles funds of EUR 26 billion for the transport sector alone. Mobility and connectivity are not meant without maritime transport. The responsibilities of the portfolio include the maritime sector, of key importance for Greece which is a global power in Shipping.”
