Mitsotakis-Erdoğan Meeting in The Hague: PM Stresses Greece’s Non-Alignment

During a press conference following the NATO summit in The Hague, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed various topics, including Greek-Turkish relations and upcoming discussions at the EU Summit in Brussels. He had a brief ten-minute meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the sidelines of the NATO summit. When asked about his concerns regarding the Tuesday evening meeting between Donald Trump and Erdoğan, Mitsotakis stated that Greece does not align itself with any side and would not comment on the Trump-Erdoğan meeting. Furthermore, he highlighted Greece’s significant increase in defense spending, stating that Greece ranks among the top five NATO countries in terms of defense expenditures as a percentage of GDP, with plans to invest up to €28 billion in its defense industry. Regarding the High-Level Cooperation Council, Mitsotakis mentioned ongoing efforts to find a mutually beneficial date for discussions. On other international issues, such as the Middle East and Libya, Mitsotakis emphasized diplomatic negotiations and stability, asserting Greece’s role as a key geopolitical player. Finally, he reiterated Greece’s commitment to strengthening its armed forces while investing in innovation and artificial intelligence.
