Mitsotakis Congratulates CDU on German Election Victory, Predicts Next Chancellor

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis hailed the victory of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the recent elections as ‘a decisive win for our political family, for Germany, and for Europe.’ In a post on Twitter, Mitsotakis congratulated Friedrich Merz, the CDU president, stating, ‘One thing is clear: you will be Germany’s next chancellor.’ According to preliminary official results, the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) secured 28.9% of the vote, marking an increase from 2021 but falling short of the 30% threshold. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) came in second with 19.9%, achieving its highest percentage since its inception 11 years ago. Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) garnered only 16.2%, its worst performance in history. Merz emphasized the need to form a stable government with a parliamentary majority as soon as possible. Celebrating the victory at the CDU headquarters in Berlin, Merz remarked, ‘Tonight we celebrate, but tomorrow we work.’
