Mitsotakis at EU Summit: European Security Must Go Beyond Eastern Borders

At the ongoing emergency European Council meeting in Brussels on March 6, 2025, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized that ‘European security cannot be limited to its eastern borders.’ He highlighted that security threats exist not only in Eastern Europe but also in the Western Balkans, Eastern and Southern Mediterranean, and the Middle East. This statement indirectly pointed to Turkey and its revisionist policies. Earlier, Mitsotakis spoke about hours of critical decisions and expressed satisfaction with the efforts to strengthen deterrent capabilities, which he has been advocating for some time. The 27 EU member states welcomed proposals for fiscal flexibility allowing countries already spending over 3% of their GDP on defense (like Greece) to continue doing so. ‘In these critical times, the strategic autonomy of the EU must be an indisputable priority,’ Mitsotakis stressed.
