Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced significant pay raises, along with a new salary and rank structure for the armed forces during a press conference in Paris following the Ukraine summit. Speaking about upcoming announcements to be made in Parliament next week regarding defense, Mitsotakis stated that a major initiative would be unveiled—namely, the new salary and rank structure for the armed forces. In collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, substantial pay increases will be granted to military personnel, funded by savings from the Ministry of National Defense’s restructuring efforts. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring that military personnel are adequately compensated to attract new recruits and achieve overall reform. Regarding the Ukraine summit, Mitsotakis noted that pressure must be applied to Russia to cease attacks on critical infrastructure to achieve a just and sustainable peace. He clarified that Greece does not belong to the countries ready to send troops to Ukraine but supports strengthening Ukraine’s own armed forces as the strongest guarantee of its security.
