In a special ceremony at the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy (YPEM), Minister Stavros Papastaurou has just signed the decision formally enrolling island municipalities into the national program ‘Interventions for Drinking Water Supply and Water Management’ — part of the broader ‘Drinking Water Supply and Water Management’ axis.

Green Light for Key Water Infrastructure Projects

The signing marks the official launch of funding for 10 critical water infrastructure projects across Greece’s islands. Among them are:

  • Optimization of existing water networks in the Cyclades;
  • Development of resilient water networks on Naxos and Amorgos;
  • Construction of a desalination unit on Astypalaia;
  • Restoration of water networks on Rhodes;
  • Support for water-related projects on Alonissos;
  • New water infrastructure initiatives on Zakynthos;
  • Installation of new networks in Dianou, Crete.

Minister Papastaurou emphasized that these interventions deliver immediate, tangible benefits for island communities. He also highlighted the ongoing public consultation for Greece’s National Water Management Strategy — a key policy framework guiding long-term water governance.

Coordinated Effort Across Ministries

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vasilis Kikilias attended the event and underscored the government’s continuous commitment to island development. He noted that €65 million in related infrastructure projects have already been launched.
