Million-Euro Scam in Karditsa: Accountant Stole Benefits from Roma

A massive ‘million-euro scam’ has been uncovered in Karditsa, where an accountant allegedly defrauded over 4,000 Roma individuals across Greece by stealing their benefits. Operating from his office in Karditsa, the accountant manipulated TaxisNet access codes, replaced declared bank accounts for benefit payments, and funneled funds into his own accounts. Victims describe how he gained their trust by claiming expertise in social benefits, only to quietly siphon off their money. One victim’s spouse recounted, “He took all the children’s benefits without leaving a cent.” Evidence suggests he used forged signatures and changed passwords, rerouting funds to different names before transferring them to his accounts. The financial damage, according to initial records, exceeds €3 million. The accountant abruptly closed his office and disappeared. Economic advisor Yiannis Hatzisalatas warned that this is not an isolated case, emphasizing the importance of vigilance as the digital state progresses. Beneficiaries should question missing payments and ensure their mobile phone and email details are updated to prevent fraudsters from altering their information.
