Mexico reacts to Trump decrees: We will defend our independence

The first reaction from his immigration decrees is a fact with President Claudia Shainbaum stressing that she will defend her country’s sovereignty and independence. In her first remarks following Donald Trump’s inauguration, Claudia Shainbaum noted that some of his initial announcements are much like measures he had taken in his previous term, while also seeking to reassure citizens that the government in Mexico will strongly defend their interests. CORVERSE “With regard to the decrees that President Donald Trump signed yesterday, I would like to say: The Mexican people can be sure that we will always defend our sovereignty and independence,” said Shainbaum with two important ministers on her side. “It is always important to be calm”, he added. In response to Trump’s initial moves to stop irregular immigration, Shanebaum said her government would act in a “humanistic” manner, although she also promised to send foreign immigrants to their countries. Trump is expected to sign more executive decrees during his current, second day in the presidency, following the measures adopted yesterday, Monday, to classify Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations, in addition to suggesting that tariffs on Mexican and Canadian exports to the United States may enter into force from February. CORVERSE At the regular morning press conference, Shanebaum noted that although Trump signed an executive decree declaring irregular immigration to the US border- Mexico as an emergency, she will insist on respecting her country’s people. She also reiterated that her government will seek security coordination and other issues with the northern neighbour, and that it has committed itself to reviewing trade terms in 2026. The peso briefly reduced its losses during Shainbaum’s message, although it later returned to the original levels, recording the worst performance in a basket of global reference currencies.
