President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her administration would prefer to avoid retaliatory measures and mutual tariffs with the United States. However, she clarified that Mexico cannot rule out this possibility following Donald Trump’s plans for global tariff imposition. Trump has mentioned that foreign governments should pay “large sums of money” to have tariffs lifted. During her customary morning press conference, Sheinbaum announced that Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard will continue negotiations with U.S. officials in Washington. “We would like to avoid imposing mutual tariffs as much as possible,” she said. “We won’t rule it out, but we prefer to keep the dialogue going.”
