Major traffic restrictions will be in place for five months as construction begins on the modernization of the Metamorfosi Grade-Separated Interchange on the Attica Motorway. Drivers using this interchange—located at the junction of the Attica Motorway (A6) and the Athens–Thessaloniki National Road (GR-1)—will face significant disruptions, including narrowed lanes and a temporary closure of the exit ramp toward Lamia.
A Key Infrastructure Project
This upgrade, commissioned by Greece’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, aims to alleviate chronic congestion at one of Attica’s most heavily trafficked road nodes. Daily bottlenecks—especially during peak hours—often cause long vehicle queues that spill over large sections of the Attica Motorway.
What to Expect
Starting Monday, 13 July, all lanes in the northbound direction (toward Lamia) will be narrowed for approximately 500 meters—from the Metamorfosi Interchange onward. Additionally, the left-side entrance ramp from the Attica Motorway onto the Athens–Thessaloniki Motorway (A1) will undergo localized narrowing.
Signage installation on the A1 motorway will take place overnight on 13 and 14 July, between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM. During those hours, lane closures will apply between kilometre markers 15.17 and 16.75: alternating closures of the left and middle lanes—and occasionally the right lane—in the Lamia-bound direction, plus closure of the left lane in the Athens-bound direction.
If works progress faster than scheduled, traffic conditions may return to normal ahead of the planned five-month timeline. The New Roads Company (Nea Odos), which manages the motorway, has implemented all necessary safety and driver assistance measures. Temporary signage will be installed throughout the area to keep motorists fully informed.
