Mertz: Europeans Cannot Replace the US in Achieving and Maintaining a Ceasefire in Ukraine

Paris was visited today (07.05.2025) by the new German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz to discuss strategic relations between France and Germany, as well as the security challenges Europe faces against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. During a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, Mertz announced discussions with France and the UK regarding nuclear deterrence in Europe while addressing the role of the US in the Ukrainian conflict. He emphasized that this dialogue complements existing partnerships with the US within NATO. The European nations cannot replace the US in achieving and maintaining a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, stated the German Chancellor. ‘The war in Ukraine will not end without stronger political and military commitment from the US. Europeans cannot substitute for this,’ he added. ‘US involvement must ensure future ceasefires,’ Mertz reiterated. While expressing hope for a lasting ceasefire agreement, he refrained from committing to guarantees for Ukraine’s security until an agreement is reached. The Chancellor plans to visit Ukraine in the coming weeks, while French President Macron predicted that Putin’s Russia would likely not honor its unilateral three-day ceasefire declared for May 8-10, 2025.
