The war in Ukraine and trade disputes between the U.S. and the European Union were discussed during a phone call late last night (08.05.2025) between the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merkts and U.S. President Donald Trump. According to a press release from the chancellor’s office, President Trump congratulated Chancellor Merkts on assuming his duties and assured him that, 80 years after the end of World War II in Europe, the U.S. remains an ‘essential friend and partner of Germany.’ The two leaders agreed to closely cooperate to end the war in Ukraine, with Chancellor Merkts supporting Trump’s appeal to ‘stop killing people’ in the country. ‘Russia must now agree to a ceasefire to create space for negotiations,’ emphasized the Chancellor, while Trump pledged strong support for German efforts, alongside France, the UK, Poland, and other European partners, for lasting peace. Additionally, the press statement noted that both leaders aim to quickly resolve trade disputes between the U.S. and the EU. They also agreed to maintain close contact and announced plans for reciprocal visits to the U.S. and Germany.
