Merkel: It Hurt to Be Linked to Nazism in Greece, But Politics Isn’t About Enjoyment

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel reflected on the difficult years of the Greek financial crisis and how she personally handled the intense political climate. Speaking to Greek media during an interview with SKAI TV, Merkel recalled the hurt she felt when Greek newspapers linked her to Nazism during the time of the referendum. She emphasized that politics is not a place for comfort or personal gratification, adding that she was always convinced Greece could overcome its challenges. Merkel also mentioned that she sometimes felt uneasy knowing certain social groups suffered more than others, but stressed that it was ultimately up to Greek politicians to make those decisions. Reflecting on her first meeting with then-Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, she admitted initial concerns due to his previous criticism of the Troika. Despite tensions, Merkel noted that their conversations were honest and straightforward.
