Meloni Remains Cautious About Sending EU Military Forces to Ukraine

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed her reservations regarding the deployment of European military forces to Ukraine, as she stated after the London Summit. Speaking to reporters, Meloni emphasized her skepticism about the French proposal for sending EU troops to Ukraine. “The presence of Italian forces in Ukraine was never on the agenda, something I want to clarify,” Meloni said. She added that she believes this solution could be overly complex and potentially less effective than other options. According to Meloni, if everyone works with logic rather than emotion and ensures a strategic vision, organizing a meeting between Europe and the United States is entirely realistic and something Italy is working towards. Meloni met today (02/03/2025) in London with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the leaders’ summit in the UK. The Italian government announced that the meeting reaffirmed Italy’s support for Ukraine and its people and the commitment, alongside European and Western partners, including the United States, to build a just and lasting peace ensuring sovereignty, security, and freedom for Ukraine. Meloni also held bilateral talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. According to an Italian government statement, the main topic of discussion was the war in Ukraine, reiterating the joint effort to seek a just and lasting peace and emphasizing the importance of maintaining Euro-Atlantic unity concerning the summit hosted today in the UK. ‘We must avoid the risk of dividing the West. I believe that Italy and the UK can play a significant role in building bridges,’ Meloni declared. ‘I proposed organizing a meeting involving U.S. and European leaders because if we split, we will all be weaker. We are all making great efforts to achieve the goal of peace, a lasting and just peace in Ukraine,’ concluded the Italian Prime Minister.
