Meloni on Trump’s Tariffs: A Problem, But Not a Catastrophe

Donald Trump’s tariffs have sent shockwaves around the globe, but Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni maintains a cooler stance. Italy is among the countries directly affected by the tariffs imposed by Trump; however, Meloni emphasized that while they pose a problem, they are not catastrophic. ‘I believe the choice of the United States is wrong and does not favor either the European or American economy, but I also think we should not fuel the climate of last-minute confrontation,’ Meloni stated in an interview with Rai. She added that Italy exports about 10% of its products to the U.S. market and acknowledged the existence of a problem that needs solving, but stressed it isn’t the catastrophe some portray it as. Meloni indicated her country will initiate dialogue with European partners, though she remains unconvinced that countering trade tariffs with more tariffs is the best option. Such a move, she warned, could harm Italy’s economy. Therefore, she advocates for honest discussions with the U.S., aiming at eliminating rather than multiplying tariffs. Lastly, she highlighted the need for Europe to simplify rules, show more courage in energy matters, and perhaps review the Stability Pact at this stage.
