Central Athens is closed due to ongoing labor protests for May Day. Since early this morning, traffic regulations have been enforced in the city center because of union gatherings, federations, and labor organizations commemorating International Workers’ Day. Currently, vehicle traffic has been halted on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue from Sekeri Street, Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, and Stadiou Street. A major strike rally organized by PAME along with various labor unions and federations is underway at Syntagma Square. The rallying cry echoes, “1st of May – Either Their Profits or Our Lives – Hope, the Struggle of the Peoples on the Path to Overthrow.” Demonstrators also chanted “Freedom for Palestine” as flags of Palestine waved alongside union banners. Mohammed Iknaibi addressed the crowd, condemning Israel’s actions against Gaza and expressing gratitude for international solidarity. Public transport services are disrupted; metro lines 2 & 3 will operate from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, while stations like Syntagma and University remain closed. Buses and trams will run from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM but expect cancellations due to a 24-hour strike.
