A historic trial is set to begin on Tuesday (01.07.2025) in Thessaloniki, where the Three-Member Court of First Instance will examine charges against 117 individuals accused of involvement in organized crime. These suspects are linked to 14 different criminal gangs allegedly responsible for hundreds of thefts and burglaries across Thessaloniki from 2020 to 2024.

Out of the 117 defendants, 57 are currently in pre-trial detention and face charges including 152 burglaries and 315 vehicle thefts. Their total illicit gains are estimated at €2.6 million. According to public broadcaster ERT, the downfall of these groups reportedly began when members stole a safe containing €1.1 million from a private residence, prompting an extensive investigation.

The case file spans over 20,000 pages with around 300 witnesses expected to testify. Given the large number of accused, the trial is expected to last several months, though authorities aim to complete it within the 12-month pre-trial detention limit.

In preparation, the Chief Police Officer of Thessaloniki, Deputy Chief George Tzimas, along with senior police officials, has already inspected the specially arranged courtroom and reviewed enhanced security measures put in place due to the scale of the trial.
