Margaret Thatcher: Here comes the opera “Mrs T” that focuses on the life and work of the “Iron Lady”

The well-known podcast historian and co-host “The Rest is History” Dominic Sandbrook, is preparing to make his debut as a libretto writer, writing an opera for Margaret Thatcher. The project entitled “Mrs T” will cover its 11-year term in the Prime Minister’s office in Great Britain. The premiere is scheduled for this year, as it has been completed 100 years since the birth of the “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher. Sandbrook, one of Britain’s most renowned historians, promises a “a familiar exploration” of Thatcher, a personality that divided and fought British society. CORVERSE This is his first libretto, while in the past he had worked with the BBC for the documentary “Thatcher: A Very British Revolution”. The podcast “The Rest is History” co-presenting since 2020 with historian Tom Holland (Tom Holland) is one of the most popular in the UK. Sandbrook will work with composer Joseph Phibbs, who had previously undertaken the “Miss Julie” of ‘August Strindberg’ while his own works such as “Flame and Shadow” have earned critics’ credit. “Her life has been featured many times on the screen, but never on the stage of an opera,” Fibs said. “More than politics, it is an exploration of Thatcher as a woman: her isolation into a male-occupied world, her often fragile relations with her cabinet members (mainly Jeffrey Howe) and the events that led to her resignation” he said. “Mrs T” will direct Lucy Bradley (Lucy Bradley), with Mezzo-soprano Lucy Schaufer (Lucy Schaufer) in the role of the same name. Thatcher was not a great opera fan, but had once stated to a Guardian journalist that Hendell was one of her favorite composers, due to his “wonderful melodies”.
