Shortly before 11 a.m. on July 14, 2026, two 42-year-old suspects in the deadly arson attack on the Marfin Bank branch in Athens appeared before the investigating judge at the Evripidou courthouse. They arrived under strict security measures and wearing bulletproof vests.
The two men face charges of premeditated homicide en masse for the May 5, 2010, fire that killed three bank employees: 32-year-old Angeliki Papathanasopoulou — who was four months pregnant — 35-year-old Paraskevi Zouli, and 36-year-old Epaminondas Tsakalis. All three were trapped by flames on the building’s third floor and died from asphyxiation.
Meanwhile, a third suspect — a 46-year-old woman — is set to appear before British judicial authorities today. She was arrested by UK police at London’s Gatwick Airport following activation of an international arrest warrant related to her alleged involvement in the Marfin Bank arson.
In addition to these three individuals, investigators from the Hellenic Police’s Homicide Department have identified two more men believed to have played decisive roles in the attack, according to preliminary investigative material. Authorities are now working to formally identify them, aiming to complete the picture of the five key suspects.
According to witness testimony cited in the investigation, one of the two unidentified men is believed to be the direct perpetrator — the masked individual who threw the Molotov cocktail into the bank.
