Marco Rubio: Peace Agreement Between Russia and Ukraine Must Be Achieved Soon

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine must be reached soon. The head of the State Department added that the Trump administration will review next week whether it will continue its role as mediator. ‘It needs to happen soon. We cannot keep dedicating time and resources to this effort if it is not going to succeed,’ said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press.’ Rubio mentioned that the US will evaluate next week whether it will continue mediating in the talks or focus on other issues. These statements came a day after President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome during Pope Francis’ funeral. In an interview aired on CBS News’ ‘Face the Nation,’ Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia will continue targeting installations used by the Ukrainian army. Responding to questions about last week’s Russian strike in Kyiv that killed civilians, Lavrov said, ‘the target of the attack was not exclusively non-military,’ adding that Russia only targets ‘installations used by the military.’ Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram that Ukraine’s supreme military commander informed him that Russia launched nearly 70 attacks today (April 27, 2025). ‘The situation at the front and the actual activity of the Russian army show that the pressure currently applied by the international community on Russia to end this war is insufficient,’ he said.
