Generally, it is transmitted to man through the stings of contaminated fleas. It can also spread with direct contact with infected animals, including rodents, wild animals and pets. Dogs and cats left wandering and hunting may bring infected fleas from dead rodents home. In this way they may endanger household members. The plague causes people sudden onset of fever, chills, headache and weakness. In most cases there is painful swelling of the lymph node in the groin, armpit or neck. Symptoms of plague in cats and dogs include fever, lethargy and anorexia. There may be swelling in the lymph node under the jaw.
