A 20-year-old man was declared brain dead after being shot by police during a high-speed chase in Argos early Wednesday, July 8, 2026. According to the Thriassio General Hospital — where he was transferred from the Argos General Hospital’s emergency department — the young man arrived around 6:30 a.m. intubated, with pinpoint pupils and a gunshot wound to the head. He underwent immediate neurosurgical intervention and remains in the neurosurgery unit in a state of brain death.
Chase and Shooting
Police said the incident began when officers attempted to stop the man’s vehicle for a routine traffic check near Argos. The driver reportedly ignored their signals, accelerated, and attempted to flee. During the pursuit, he allegedly tried to run over officers who were outside their patrol cars and collided with multiple police vehicles, prompting an extended chase marked by dangerous driving.
The chase ended when patrol cars forced the suspect’s vehicle to a stop. The driver then crashed into the patrol vehicles before abandoning his car and attempting to escape by jumping over a stone wall.
Medical Response and Evidence
An EKAB ambulance rushed him first to Argos General Hospital and later to a hospital in Attica. During follow-up investigations near the initial checkpoint, officers discovered and seized an air pistol. The weapon has been sent to the Hellenic Police’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations for forensic analysis.
Prosecutors were immediately notified. As part of the preliminary investigation under Greece’s in flagrante delicto procedure, the two involved officers have been arrested.
