Two individuals—the president of the Malevizi shooting range and its certified instructor—have been released without charges following their arrest in connection with the death of a 43-year-old woman at the Heraklion shooting range on Saturday afternoon, June 27, 2026.

Investigation Focuses on Mobile Phone Data and Signature Authenticity

Authorities in Heraklion continue their investigation into the incident. According to the local news site maleviziotis.gr, police are examining both the authenticity of the woman’s signature on official documents and the data from her mobile phone—potentially shedding light on her final movements before the tragedy.

Shooting Range Officials Maintain Protocol Was Followed

The shooting range’s president stated that all required safety protocols were strictly observed—from issuing the temporary permit and briefing the participant on safety rules, to providing protective gear and a supervised training firearm.

Timeline and Circumstances of the Incident

The woman had been in Crete for about two weeks on vacation. Reports suggest she traveled to the island to meet someone from her past. Investigators are exploring whether events preceding her visit to the shooting range may have influenced her actions.

According to the president’s statement, the woman appeared calm and familiar with the process, having already fired several rounds. Shortly afterward, she asked him to step back a few paces so she could continue independently, saying constant supervision made her uncomfortable. Within seconds—and as per his account—she turned the firearm on herself and fired.

Despite immediate assistance from those present and rapid transport to Venizelio Hospital, doctors were unable to save her. She died during emergency surgery from severe injuries.
