Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the fatal shooting of a 43-year-old woman at a shooting range in Malevizi, Crete, on Saturday, 27 June 2026. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death remains ongoing.

Arrests of Club President and Assistant Instructor

According to CRETA24, authorities detained the president of the shooting club — responsible for overseeing operations at the facility — and an assistant firearms instructor. A criminal file has been opened against both as part of the probe into how the incident unfolded.

Scrutiny Over Participation Process and Signature Authenticity

Investigators are also examining how the woman came to participate in the training session. She had been issued a provisional 48-hour sports identification card. Central to the inquiry is the signature appearing on that document. To determine whether it is genuine or forged, a forensic handwriting analysis has been ordered.

What Happened at the Range?

The woman, originally from Thessaloniki, was in Crete for vacation and visited the Malevizi shooting range to take part in a scheduled training session. Preliminary reports indicate she asked the instructor to step away shortly before the incident, saying his presence made her uncomfortable and pressured her. As he moved a few steps back, she reportedly turned the firearm toward herself and fired.

Fatal Outcome Despite Emergency Care

Her family, notified immediately, rushed to Heraklion. Tragically, they arrived to learn she had died during surgery at Venizelio Hospital, despite intensive medical efforts.
