Malaysia: Prime Minister Muhiddin Yassin resigns

He admitted that his attempt to secure the necessary political support to devise a plan for recovery from the pandemic had failed.

Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today submitted his resignation to the King of Malaysia, acknowledging that his attempt to secure the necessary political support to devise a plan to recover from the pandemic had failed.

“There are some who are hungry for power and authority, instead of prioritizing human lives,” the outgoing prime minister told political opponents.

Yassin will serve as caretaker Prime Minister until the king is elected prime minister.

Yassin has been Malaysia’s prime minister for 17 months, and his resignation could lead to a new period of political instability, coupled with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
